View Full Version : MAJOR FORUM UPGRADE SOON

I should be doing a pretty major Forum upgrade soon.
I should be forming the upgrade in the early hours of Wednesday morning GMT.
The new version includes things like Topic Subscription (which Scott has only just mentioned would have been a handy thing), Linear Topic option, Topic Emailing, Lo-Fi Text view, and Multi Quoting.
Not to mention a warning system for unruly users (Phear!).
This upgrade is most likely a stepping stone. Either to a paid version of IPB (which this is) or a paid version of something like VBulletin. For reasons of newer features and, more importantly, security.
I'm going to do whatever it takes to preserve ALL the data (Users/Posts/etc.) we've built up since our inception. But it may take some time to get everything running as it should.
If you see anything performing in a way that it shouldn't then add a post to THIS THREAD.
Thank you for your time.

Is this a "great minds think alike" thing, John? Or is it "Christ Scott, NOW you tell me!" :teeth:
Still, you've all gotta give credit to John here. I may be the one with the biggest mouth around here, but he's the one pulling all the strings. JohnShaft is the motor by which this whole site runs. Great work, buddy, looking forward to the talked-about upgrade as much as the other posters. B)

Ah, well, this ISN'T a graphical update, sadly! It's an update to the Forum code, in preparation for a "God, he's got to change this godawful look shortly" graphical update. It just saves me updating skins twice, as it has to be done pretty much every time most Forum software gets updated.
I don't think I'm going to be that happy with the new look when I finally sign off on it (which likely won't be in the next few days). Mostly because there's some things I just can't get looking how I would want them. At this moment it's as much about having a 'black' option as anything else. I'll have to resort to tweaking it later.
So expect the new Forum features, and *nothing* new graphically, tonight. I'm just praying everything comes together fairly quickly. One word of warning, it likely will mess with the Article submission (or at least the auto-posting of Articles to the forum). So send me any problems you have with that right off the bat, as they take top priority obviously.
And as for my contribution, if it was half of what I imagine then it really would be something to talk about. :afro:
As I said though, I'm pretty serious about adding a lot of new stuff ASAP.

Looks like John is hard at work doing the new forums. Good work, man! B)I definitely am hard at work. I can't even get myself logged in to the board without disabling my firewall (which is no option really). I've been trying the last couple of hours to solve this single problem. Damn I hate websites some times.

Right I'm now able to login after changing the Board Cookie settings (for everyone). That should alleviate the problem for all. If it does not then it is important you contact me, as you won't be able to log into the board you can mail me through the CONTACT FORM (http://www.horrorexpress.com/contact.php) on the site, or by mailing me at webmaster@IGETENUFSPAMhorrorexpress.com (remove the caps).
I really don't want anyone to be left not being able to Login to the boards and thinking "Fuck this" and not returning. So PLEASE mail me so I can resolve this problem for you.
It is possible that EVERYONE may have to login again (just once more) because of me modifying the global cookie settings. If you do not remember your password again CONTACT ME.
I think Raven may have had the same problem I did, as he was on the board a while, but not posting. And I could login, I just got logged out repeatedly when I tried to do something.
And Unc, this is the default skin in this version. I agree it does look kinda cooler, but then I like the colour choices too. I might do something with it to skin it.

Yeah John, when I try to upload a news item, this pesky error message comes up and...
*off John's frustrated, rage-filled glare*
Well yeah, you've got your hands full... :whistling:

Yeah, it all needs interlinking with the site again. I'm going to make that my first priority tonight. Scott if you mail me any news stories you want up ASAP I'll upload them through the database.
I should have this part of it sorted by tonight. (Famous last words)
EDIT: Done. News can be uploaded, and edited, now.
EDIT: Review uploading also done.
Everything should be back to normal now.
