My friend and I are having a heated arguement over what is a better movie.
The Shining
OR
Dog Soldiers

I say The Shining is or atleast one of the greatest horror films of all time.
he says it unrealistic.
I saw Dog Soldiers is unrealistic, The Shining is phycological(spelling?).
coments?

Funny movies to compare, considering they're completely different. One a dark psychological horror, one a squadie movie with Werewolves. Which is the better? I guess it's all personal opinion, and mine would be that The Shining is the best by miles. It's a movie that can really get to me. It features far superior direction, acting, and all the other elements which make a good movie. Dog Soldiers is fun, though I didn't think much of it at first I've come to like it a lot, but it's a stretch to compare it to the more accomplished The Shining. Though, Dog Soldiers is grand, and a movie you can put on at any time, whereas The Shining can be a slog to get through (and into) if you're not in the right mood.

Scary when you find yourself agreeing with Uwe Boll.

A film about an alcoholic suffering from the pangs of isolation and self-doubt begins to be influenced by forces that may or may not be in his head and turn against the people he loves. This is less realistic than soldiers fighting a family of werewolves? No offense, but I think I'd be slapping your friend so long that I would need to take coffee breaks.

I think both films are excellent btw, even if THE SHINING is the better of the two. But also I don't really think a horror film needs realism. What keeps horror so entertaining is that it typically keeps one foot rooted in reality, but the other squarely in fantasy. In fact, many of the great European horror films do not hold up to logical analysis. Doesn't mean SUSPIRIA is anything less than a masterpiece.

A different sort of debate then... which is better, the original 80's THE SHINING movie starring the ever-lovable Jack Nicholson or the later 1997 tv mini-series, THE SHINING featuring WINGS star, STEVEN WEBER?

Uwe say Jack...hands down.

Wait, that not sound right.

Old Shining much better.

But I must agree, comparing this story to Werewolf movie is odd.

Like comparing apples and strippers.

YOu know i will get slapped but I liked dog soldiers better for some things. I mean i love Jacks acting, I love the setting that hotel and the isolation..it just never got to me. I have had to spend long periods of time alone, job related, and umm just not scary. Dont get me wrong it was really good. I just was never nervous, scared or bothered.

This being said I have seen miles better movies then both put togther. I liked dog soldiers a bit, I mean the house and the girl  a little predictable...But...I agree with one thing, you cant compare.....horror geeks cannot be talked to about classics...they cannot be compared to different generational movies.

It dosnt work..I mean my two favourite films are dead birds and a tale of two sisters, to different to compare.
But i had more fun with dog soldiers, but then I am onyl slightly of geekdom then arnt i hehehehe.
