[I 180w thing_french I]The Sci-fi Channel has announced an ambitious and controversial line-up of potential television events. Genres surround the realms of sci-fi, fantasy and - yes, horror.

The most controversial proposal is a four hour miniseries based on John Carpenter's THE THING. Carpenter's film was already a remake of Howard Hawks' THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, which in turn was based on the story "Who Goes There?" The SFC version will derive much of it's inspiration from Carpenter's film and the original short story. George Clooney previously expressed interest in a live TV broadcast based on "Who Goes There." This is not that version. Other programs in the works:

6 WAYS TIL SUNDAY - A six hour miniseries about a man trying to stop his death in six days. The miniseries will unfold over six nights, we assume each episode constituting a day.

Also on the miniseries front - MYST, THE FOREVER WAR, A TALE OF TWO CITIES, RED MARS, THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS, the EARTHSEA trilogy and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE MINISERIES, already in production.

As for TV shows:

DEAD LAWYERS - Title characters return from the afterworld to help the people they wronged in their life. Knowing how most lawyers operate, this could take forever, and they'll probably find a way to charge their clients from beyond the grave.

THE DIVIDE - a psychic DJ, his dead twin sister and a coroner team up to solve crimes.

LEGION - A man sells his soul to the devil for his family. Now able to recognize fellow demonic vessels, he walks the countryside, dispatching the demons and trying to redeem himself. Former Oscar-winner and center square, Whoopi Goldberg is one of the producers.

STARGATE: ATLANTIS - A spin-off of the STARGATE SG-1 series that incorporates Atlantian mythos.

PAINKILLER JANE - Based on the comic book, this involves a tough, genetically-enhanced superheroine. John Harrison of DUNE will direct the pilot.

CLIVE BARKER'S THE EVIL ONE - No, it's not whoever made CANDYMAN 3. Rather it's Barker's tale of a battle between good and evil... from the devil's point of view. One of the shows I am genuinely excited about.

TOTAL ECLIPSE - A college professor discovers his college is located on a Hellmout- er, that is "a nexus of the otherworldly, arcane, and supernatural." In truth, this show seems to incorporate more science fiction and traditional fantasy.

SUTURE GIRL - Based on the SPAWN spin-off character, Suture is a woman who is stiched back together by gypsies after she is murdered by a serial killer. Sticking with her gypsy companions, she rids the world of evildoers.

Also in production: ANONYMOUS REX, REVIELLE'S 1000 DAYS, a new QUANTUM LEAP series and BROTHER VOODOO, based on the obscure Marvel Comics character.

Unfortunately, Sci-fi is also getting into the reality TV biz. SCARE TACTICS is just the tip of the iceberg. You can also expect - MAD MAD HOUSE, LIFE ON MARS, LAB RATS, PSYCHIC INVESTIGATORS, the ILLUSIONIST special and several SCI-FI DECLASSIFIED specials.

Sci-fi Channel is also planning the following feature films: INTERCEPTOR FORCE III (am I the only one who never heard of the first two?), DRAGON STORM, THE IDAHO CREATURE INCIDENT, GHOST MONKEY, SNAKEHEAD TERROR, PHANTOM FORCE and GARGOYLE.
