Out of all of the Asian horror on this site I don't think I saw this one mentioned.
I really dug it. The fact that the movie was backwards kind of reminded me of Memento. It also seems that the balck hooded figure uses it's victims forms after it kills them, to kill others. I thought it was very creepy. Reminded me of Ju On but I still enjoyed it.
There's 2 other ones I'd like to see.
LIVING HELL
JUNK
Can anyone tell me anything about these?

Living Hell is high on my to buy list.
Junk is a great little zombie movie, lots of fun, and has some hillarious moments where Japanese actors are speaking English.
Do you mean Ju Rei? http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...1707415-4511822 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002ZDW7Q/qid%3D1105398951/202-1707415-4511822)

That's probably what he's talking about since it's fairly new to English subtitled DVD. But there are actually FIVE different JU-REI (otherwise known as "Cursed Spirits") movie features floating around out there. They're like JUON in the way that there's several made-for-tv movies (called JU-LEI with an "L") and two theatrical movies (called JU-REI with an "R"). Some posters and info...
There's JU-LEI: Shinrei Mystery File (2000), the first tv movie...
http://cinemabizarre.blogspot.com/Ju-Lei%201%20Poster.jpg
Followed by two more tv movies, JU-LEI 2: Satsujin Genba no Noroi (2000) followed by JU-LEI 3: Noroi no Exocist (2001). Then came the first theatrical motion picture, JU-REI: The Movie (2002)...
http://cinemabizarre.blogspot.com/Jurei%20Movie%201%20Poster.jpg
And lastly, there's the second movie (and what's currently available on DVD) JU-REI 2: Black Spirit (aka The Uncanny) (2004)...
http://cinemabizarre.blogspot.com/jurei%20Movie%202%20poster.jpg
And of course, the R1 DVD cover which Supercool linked to...

Believe it or not, I just watched LIVING HELL tonight. And I'm just not quite sure what to make of it. I mean, if it had been a movie from any other country, I probably would have turned it off before finishing the whole thing. But the simple fact that it was an Asian horror flick, well, I just knew deep down that at some point, it was gonna try to go too far. And that's exactly why I had to watch it. And that's exactly why I wasn't disappointed because it DOES indeed try to go too far.
LIVING HELL is a messy, bloody, schlocky B-movie molded outta the same sick demented celluloid sleaze as the infamous Japanese snuff wanna-be series, GUINEA PIG. Yup. It's an hour long display of torture, mutilation, and inhuman violence towards several hapless victims (including a boy in a, heh, heh, wheelchair). So, if that's your cup of tea, you're certainly gonna dig LIVING HELL. I know I did.

As for JUNK, I agree with Supercool. I even did a review of the film on the HORROR EXPRESS main webpage. You can read it by clicking >> HERE (http://www.horrorexpress.com/filmreview.php?id=306) <<.

Yes Supercool, Ju Rei is what I meant. I enjoyed the hell out of that movie. Had to buy it.
I just started to get back into horror full force about 2 months ago. My favorite at that time was An American Werewolf in London. It made a huge impression on me when I saw it in the theatre back in 1983. It's still my favorite werewolf movie but Ginger Snaps follows at a close second.
Then a friend of mine intoduced me to Asian horror and I immediately fell in love with it. There's just so many good ones.
I love the bloody ones and the really creepy ghost(spirit) ones. If there's one thing I've learned is they are patient about scaring the shit out of you. I dig it.
I would have to say that my favorite one I've bought so far is THE UNTOLD STORY.
This movie rocks!!! The main character did a KICKASS job. Call me sick, but I was craving Japanese food afterwards, especially pork buns.
I did pick up one of the Tomie movies, I think Replay. I liked it. One of the reasons I saw it was because it was based on a manga(comic) and I collect comics also. My favorite being Spawn, The Tenth, and Darkchylde.
I will continue my Japanese horror collection because every one has rocked so far.
Devilman, you sure know you're shit on this subject.

Well hell, you've convinced me. I was borderline about picking it up sight unseen but you've sold me now. I think I'll get it today.

Oh, and there's a-plenty more to choose from too. If you haven't seen 'em yet, I highly recommend JUON THE GRUDGE and A TALE OF TWO SISTERS.

UNTOLD STORY is great! I'm with you on trying those buns! hey, the cops seemed to like them :whistling:
I've got the first TOMIE movie! I didn't see it until a few months ago, because I'd heard bad things. Completely unfounded, I loved the movie, and want to see the rest of the series.
I really like UZUMAKI (also based on a Junji Ito manga), and would highly reccomend it. I've also checked out the directors other movies, and would also reccomend LONG DREAM, a great TWIGHLIGHT ZONE style tale of horror.

Thanks for the info Steve. I'd heard of JU REI recently, but didn't realise it was part of a series of movies. Interesting. I think I'll follow suit and pick it up sometime soon. The JUON comparisons kinda put me off though, as I've been in a total gore frenzy of late, but I could proberly do with some creeps.
Oh, on the subject of Asian spook movies. I'd like to reccomend a Scottish movie called URBAN GHOST TORY. It really reminded me of the Asian spook movies we love and, though heavy on the drama, was a fantastic watch.

I bought Ju On recently and liked it better than the American version. I have a list of must sees for the Asian horror films.
1. A Tale of Two Sisters (Steve's recomendation)
2. Uzumaki (Supercool's recomendation)
3. Dark Water (Isn't the American version of this coming out soon?)
4. Ichi the Killer (I heard this is good and gory)
5. Inugami
6. Evil Dead Trap
7. Junk
8. Shikoku
9. Living Hell
10. My Little Eye
11. Shiver (Steve gave it a good review)
12. The Eye

Oh definitely yes, TOMIE is fantastic. I'm surprised you read negative things about it.
However, as for the TOMIE sequels, I've got all five DVD's but have only watched parts 1 - 3 and 5, not 4 yet. So far, they're all pretty decent (some better than others) but I still find the first movie to be the best of the bunch.
And the JUNJI ITO manga of the TOMIE saga, man, they're great. There's currently two English translated volumes available. I highly recommend them.

I just finished up JU-REI myself last night (from your recommendation) and I quite enjoyed it for what it was. The DVD quality wasn't that good but all in all, a snazzy little addition to the genre.
Yes, it's very JUON-like in it's "chapters" setup, and that's what people will certainly compare it to. But I thought JU-REI had it's own brand of scares.
One thing though, did you ever notice that almost every victim was a sweet nubile Japanese schoolgirl? I wonder what the director had against perky young Japanese gals anyway. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. Screaming and panic-ridden Japanese sweeties running about are always a pleasure to watch on the tv screen, ya know.

And when the guy is in his hotel room, and the 2 ghostly Asian school girls are coming up from the foot of the bed after him, I would have gotten confused if I were him. Do I get scared, or start undressing? :teeth:

Question: Do all Japanese Police Chiefs have a fine Asian hooker for every day of the week?
I thought the female cop looked better than any of his hookers when she dressed up. Very nice!! :dribble:

My friends think I'm mentally unstable too so I know the feeling.
Remember the part in Ju On where the Asian (ghost) girl comes up from underneath the girls covers?
I was watching it with friends and I said, "No,no, no, honey, don't come up here, get your ass back down there!" I was the only person laughing after my comment. I just got looks from them as if to say, "What a sick bastard." HAHAHAHA :D
Something about Asian women, they're just so damn exotically beautiful. My fiancee knows that too and takes full advantage of it. She has a friend that's also Asian, and hot. I can't stand being around them at the same time or I feel like a robot who's about to short circuit. :pinch: :dribble:

Whether they're covered in blood, muddy and wet, back from the dead, or ghostly visible, Asian chicks make my knees go weak.
Too bad we don't actually know each other because I do believe we would have a great time watching Asian movies together.

...in my qeue at GreenCine (http://www.greencine.com) for a long time.
Speaking of GREENCINE, I popped over to their website...
GreenCine is the #1 DVD Rent-by-Mail site for the alternative scene!
Is this true? Are they worth the money? They're certainly one of the higher priced services ($21.95 per month) for the standard "Three-Out-At-A-Time" plan.
I quickly browsed through their horror section and it looks like they carry lots and lots of shot-on-video indie titles but they have just about every shitty quality cheapo DVD from Madacy Entertainment, Alpha Video, and Diamond Home Video too.
There isn't a strictly Asian movie section. Instead, they have a foreign language section but after browsing, I really didn't see much that I haven't found anywhere else (talking about just their Asian selection).
Now, I won't say they didn't have some interesting oddball stuff but are they worth the twenty two bucks a month? And how's the mailing service? Fast? Slow? Mulitple distribution centers?
