Oh, good news, good news for us zombie comic readers...
DEADWORLD RETURNS AT IMAGE
Deadworld, the long running horror comic from Arrow and Caliber, returns in a new series starting in March from Image Comics. Original Deadworld artist Vince Locke will join writer Gary Reed.
Deadworld originally came out in the late 1980¹s from Arrow Comics. The first issue sold more than 75,000 copies and built a readership who followed the series to Caliber with issue #10 and for another 40 issues.
Here's how the serires is described:
"A supernatural holocaust was unleashed and the dead walked the Earth. Deadworld was unique amongst zombie comics as it dealt more with the human aspect of dealing with the new order of things. The initial storyline followed a group of teens in a schoolbus who unwittingly held the secret to controlling the floodgates of letting the world being consumed by the dead. The main protagonist was the Harley riding and sarcastic leader of the undead...King Zombie"
Said Reed: "Deadworld will be a retelling of the original series yet will seem like an all-new story as we are not bound by the parameters of the original series. We can keep what worked and jettison what didn¹t."
Reed said that new readers will find the Image series to be very reader introductory and former fans will see some familiarity but it will be essentially all new. "We have to treat it as a new series," Reed said, "yet we also have to acknowledge the previous readers. After all, there were some 550,000 copies of the old Deadworld series in print. We can¹t just ignore all that."
The series is scheduled for a bi-monthly run with the option of taking it monthly if sales warrant. Reed said that there will be an additional month scheduled at the beginning so retailers can get a chance to gauge the sales before ordering the second.
"Having been a retailer for nearly 20 years, I understand how difficult it is to judge how something is going to sell and ordering the second issue prior to the release of the first was always a tough call. This will give a true idea to the retailers," Reed said.
In addition to the new comic series, Deadworld also has a novel in production from Reed and Gary Francis and an original CD of music based on the Deadworld comic. The CD will be from John Bergin who did the soundtrack for The Crow movie.
That's just excellent news. I've still got most of the old issues and they're still a great read all these years later. If you've never read 'em, I highly recommend them (but you can stop when they meet the military).
