My buddy loves the quintessential killer shark movie, JAWS (1975). We were talking and he informed me that there was another shark movie that came out at the same time (or soon after) that was so plagiaristic of JAWS that Universal Studios (if not Spielberg himself) sued and had it removed from the theatres altogether. He said he actually caught it on the big screen before it got snatched away. Of course, so many years later, he can't seem to remember the name of it now. So, the question is, what was the name of the movie and has it been released on DVD (either legit or bootleg) on any region format?

No, I don't think that's it but it does sound like a good cheezy shark-attack flick none the less.

That would be The Last Shark
Description from midnight video:
UNCUT/gorgeous quality 88 minute LBX import print of aka ‘L’Ultimo Squalo/ Great White/The Last Jaws’ the sought after 1980 film from Enzo Castellari. For the basic plot of this rarely seen and highly recommended Italian production just watch ‘Jaws’. Stars James Franciscus, Vic Morrow, Joshua Sinclair and Stefania Girolami. This film was such a blatant rip-off of ‘Jaws’ that Universal studios obtained a court injunction against US distributors Film Ventures to ban any further showings! Our newly updated print is in razor sharp video quality in a LBX format. [ JS AA ]

That certainly sounds like the same movie but the name (The Last Shark) doesn't ring a bell. I did some checking from what you listed and you're right, that is the same flick just renamed GREAT WHITE.
Marketed in America under the title "Great White," the film had a rather large advertising budget of over four million dollars. Shortly before the film's release, Universal Pictures filed suit against the producers claiming the film was too derivative of "Jaws." Universal won the lawsuit and "Great White" was pulled very shortly after its release.
Cool thanks, and I see it's available on DVD-R over at MIDNIGHT too. I'll certainly tell him.
